Details: Veteran restaurateurs Carlos and Luz Delia Anaya are building a new home on NE 27th Street for El Caporal.
They expect to move from a leased space on Twin Knolls Drive to the new building in spring. Every aspect of the 4,765 square-foot building at 62040 NE 27th St. was designed for El Caporal, which has been in business since 1997, Luz Delia Anaya said.
Anaya, a native of Guadalajara, Mexico, said she drew her inspiration from two modernist Mexican architects, Luis Barragán and Ricardo Legorreta. The exterior walls will be covered in stucco and stone with a bright color scheme, said architect Steve Olson, project manager at Steele Associates. The main color is a creamy yellow, accented in red and purple, he said.
“Inside, it’s going to be very warm and inviting,” Olson said.
With a patio along 27th Street, the new El Caporal will have seating for about 200 people.
El Caporal has two locations, Sunriver and the east side of Bend. With their east-side lease expiring, the Anayas said they had an opportunity to find a new location but wanted to stay on the east side of Bend. After leasing for 20 years, Carlos Anaya said he figured it was time to buy land and build. GDL Tierra Mojada LLC, an entity owned by the Anayas, bought the land in 2016.
The new El Caporal will be next door to a Surf Thru Express Car Wash and a hotel slated for Livingston Drive. Bend Lodging Group LLC, an entity based in Ridgeland, Mississippi, bought the land on Livingston Drive in October.
Access to the El Caporal parking lot will be from Livingston Drive, but because of the hotel, the restaurant should see a lot of walk-up traffic, Olson said.
