Fire station to be completed by September

Owner: Deschutes County Rural Fire Protection District No. 2

General Contractor: Griffin Construction, Prineville

Architect: Soderstrom Architects, Portland

Details: An 8,636-square-foot, $3.97 million fire station is under construction next door to the current Tumalo station, which was built in 1977.

Construction started last September and is expected to be complete by Sept. 1, said Gary Marshall, executive director of the Deschutes County Rural Fire Protection District No. 2.

The district chose to build next to the station because it owns the land and the location benefits response times, Marshall said. The district relocated an old house that was next to the station at the northwest corner of 4th Street and Cook Avenue, he said.

While avoiding a land purchase saved money, there was an additional cost associated with the building site, Marshall said. The station will rest on 100 pilings driven 50 feet into the ground. The extra foundation support was required to ensure the station, deemed an “important structure,” withstands an earthquake, he said.

The exterior of the two-story building will be brick veneer and metal, and the roof will be covered in solar panels, he said.

The station will have four apparatus bays, Marshall said. Inside, firefighters will have four dorm rooms, three bathrooms, laundry, offices, a workout room, kitchen and day room. The district plans to keep the old station to store equipment and antique fire engines.
